Organic East Timor
After a difficult history, on May 20, 2002, East Timor was internationally recognized as an independent state and the world’s newest democracy. Cooperativa Café Timor (CCT) was founded in the wake of the destruction of much of East Timor after it gained independence from Indonesia in 1999. In 2000, a group of farmers united to form CCT in an attempt to market their coffee and re-enter the world marketplace. Today, CCT has 19,600 members from 16 base cooperatives and 494 small-scale farmer groups. CCT has been certified Fair Trade since 2001.
